DRIVER LOSES MABEL, FINDS JAIL – REVISED

A fifteen-year-old boy was injured in a car accident when the minivan he was traveling in was hit by a pickup truck at an intersection. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital. The paramedics said that it appeared that the boy had nothing more serious than a broken left leg, but that internal injuries were always a possibility. The boy was conscious and alert. His mother, who was driving, was uninjured. She said that the truck appeared out of nowhere, and she thought she was going to die. She turned the steering wheel sharply to the left, and the truck hit her minivan on the passenger side.

The driver of the truck was a 50-year-old man who was unemployed and apparently had been drinking—police found 18 empty beer cans inside the truck. The man denied drinking, but he failed the police test for sobriety. When asked to touch his nose with his arms outstretched and eyes closed, he was unable to touch any part of his head.

The handcuffed man asked the police if they knew where “Mabel” was as he was put into the back seat of the police vehicle. The police asked him if Mabel was his wife. He said, “She’s my dog, my dog! Where’s my baby?” A dog with a collar, but no identification, was found minutes later, half a block away. The man was taken to the city jail and booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and on causing an accident.

MAÍNA FERREIRA

Well, when you drive you have responsibilities and you have to follow the rules. Responsible people cause fewer accidents. You are not allowed to drive after drinking because you may cause a lot of troubles. You can go to the jail, pay a fee and other things. This history is an example. If you drink and cause an accident, you will have to pay for it.

 FELIPE OLIVEIRA

Well, I guess people have to be aware and not drive while they are drunk. This can be seriously harmful to us and other people too. If a person is driving I think not even a drop of alcoholic beverage should be taken, because traffic is something very serious. Unfortunately, the punishment for driving drunken is going to jail or paying a mandatory fee, which is a sacrifice that the person actually learns.

ERIVALDO

To my mind, people should always be aware while driving, because there are people driving while they are drunk. You are not allowed to smoke, to talk on the phone or to drive without wearing seat belt, because there will be fewer accidents when you make it. In my opinion people who drink while driving should be punished, the first step to stop this is not allowing people to drive more.

GIULIA GUISTI

When you drive you have to respect the law, which drunken drivers don’t. He was irresponsible and could have killed that woman and that boy. While driving, you are not allowed to drink because you can cause an accident or troubles, unfortunately, people don’t obey this law causing deaths, accidents or loosing their driver’s license. As punishment, those people who killed people in an accident should go to prison and those who just crashed their car should do community work.

PABLO ALVES

Well, you shouldn’t be drinking while driving. If you drive completely drunken you can cause many accidents, and unfortunately deaths, damage or injury. In this story, the person was drunk, which resulted in a dangerous accident. Be aware, if you drink don’t drive.

GUILHERME HENRIQUE

While you are driving, you must respect the other drivers, traffic lights, pedestrians and signs. Be careful. Using the seat belts is always allowed and recommended. Answering the phone is not allowed because it distracts the driver. Drinking when you’re driving is not allowed, because it can lead to a serious accident involving many lives.

FÁBIO ARAÚJO

So, is not allowed to drive after had drunken because when you are drunk, you lose the responsibility and motor coordination, if you cause an accident you have to pay and you have to be judged! To my mind, it is not allowed to use the cell phone while driving because you have to pay total attention on the street!

A MURDER SUICIDE REVISED

A man and a woman died in an apparent murder-suicide last night in Altadena. The man was 74-year-old Dominic Vittorio. The woman was his 70-year-old wife, Victoria. The couple had been married for 50 years. In fact, their 50th anniversary occurred just a month ago, according to their next-door neighbor, Mrs. Allen. The couple was childless and had no close friends. Mr. Vittorio was a retired carpenter who had emphysema and was blind in one eye because of a cataract. His wife was a diabetic who had already had one foot amputated because of complications from the disease. Her eyesight was almost completely gone.
“They were such a nice couple,” said Mrs. Allen. “I’ve lived next to them for the last 20 years or so. I’m widowed, and Dom always used to help me with things like changing light bulbs and fixing appliances. They had no kids, but they were always friendly to the neighborhood kids. Every Halloween they handed out tons of candy and fresh fruit. But about eight years ago Vicky came down with diabetes, and things just haven’t been the same for her or Dom. They used to be so friendly and full of life, and then they just seemed to get quieter and quieter.”

FERNANDO ALEX
So Mrs. Allen called the police like it is done in the police movies when a criminal man breaks into a house. However, the police checked out and the gun was in the Dominic’s hands. Naturally, this didn’t mean it was a suicide, but then they also found a note to Mrs. Allen saying that after their diseases there wasn’t sense in life and that Allen could take care of their house from now. In addition, Vittorio’ next-door neighbor gained a fortune left by them! And, as a result, Allen built a statue of the couple, who “lived together in life and in death.” Definitely, the situation changed the life of Mrs. Allen. Thus, life goes on.

LUCAS MOURÃO
The neighborhood was absolutely sad, because they were one of the friendlier and helpful old couples of that place as I knew them two for a long time, I always visit them, for this reason, they stayed very happy with my company. The children of the neighborhood will miss them.

BERNARDO CAVALCANTI
Mrs. Allen then entered the house to see the reason for the silence. It was then that Mrs. Allen saw Dominic hanged in the middle of the room with a note into his pocket, saying he could not stand his wife and that he had killed her, and that her body was buried in the backyard. Scared Mrs. Allen called the police to take care of everything. The neighborhood was shocked by this attitude of a couple who seemed so happy.

LARISSA ROMÃO
Ms. Allen looked to see why there was so silent. Mrs. Dominic Allen found Mr. Allen dismembered in a room with a note on the wall, saying he had killed her and people would never find her body. The neighborhood would never expect such an attitude from a couple who seemed to be so happy.

ANA CAROLINA
Mrs. Allen thought there was a weird silence of the couple, so he went to see what was happening. Then he saw Dominic dead and in his hand there was a knife and a paper in which was written “The appearances deceive! I wasn’t happy and this was the only solution to our problems! (She is in the bedroom).”

AGENOR
The neighbors didn’t see anyone in the house since the Mrs. Victoria died. When Mrs. Allen entered in the room she saw Mr. Dom fell on the floor then she called the police. He was holding a picture of Mrs. Victoria. Then the police concluded that he died because he was so sad.

HISTORY CHALLENGED RESIVED

FERNANDO ALEX
I honestly don’t believe in any of these headlines, except the first one. They are only interesting and funny. I can be wrong, but I can’t generalize that all Italians don’t like number 17 and that all Japanese don’t like number four. The World Cup results depend on the players’ abilities. Triskaidekaphobia and Paraskevidekatriaphobia are just foolishness! People are not afraid of numbers, but from what they have learned about it. I’m afraid of math! And, about scientistS, well, all scientists can be a little crazy, we like them…But there’s a hard-to-believe story that I can write about. It’s about the story that the world will end in 2012. Is it true? I don’t think so; the world went on 1000, 2000, 2001 and will go on in 2012.

LARISSA ROMÃO
I honestly do not believe in any such securities, except the first. They are interesting and funny at the same time. For example, it’s widespread that the results of the World Cup depend on the skills of the players. But it’s hard to believe the story is true? I think so, nobody knows the day of tomorrow.

BERNARDO CAVALCANTI
I honestly don’t believe in any of these headlines, except that The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp (marijuana) paper. I think that maybe it’s true, but I don’t know, almost all the scientists are crazy, but who knows. To win the World Cup the team needs to have good players, but some money can interfere in the result, so it’s complicated. I have the same opinion on a hard-to-believe story as Alex.

LUCAS MOURÃO
I honestly don´t believe in any of these headlines, for example, I don’t think that the world cup is a fraud because the champions have the best soccer players in the world, as Brazil and Argentina. Dinosaur and chicken are from different species, so it is impossible to create a Chickenosaurus. The first one I don’t know anything about it.

DANIELLE BAIRRADA
I believe in the first one, because the hemp’s fiber is widely used in paper industry, so it may be possible that the declaration of independence was written on hemp paper. According to the theory of evolution, the birds came from dinosaurs, considering that birds are bipedal and lay eggs just like the dinosaurs did I don’t believe it is possible to use cells from chickens to bring their ancestral, or of any other animal alive. And about the World Cup, I can’t say that the results are a fraud, but it can be possible because everything that involves money can be questioned. There is a book and a movie that says the Egyptian pyramids were built by extraterrestrial, it is hard to believe, because they are old buildings so there is no concrete evidence.

JEAN
I don´t believe in any of these headlines. Many headlines, for instance, the Declaration of Independence being written on hemp, a dinosaur created by a chicken and a fraud in a world cup because the champions have the best players. Only a stupid person would believe in things like that. I think we need to use our brain before believing in all the newspaper and magazines say.

ANA CAROLINA
I don’t believe in any of these headlines! It would be very strange at least a declaration of independence written on a hemp paper, many headlines as these are only made up to cause polemic and foremost, we should not believe everything that magazines and newspapers speak!

TOEFL 1 – TEAM WORK

Hello Toefl 1 students, follow the instructions below. Try to do it on time. Enjoy it!

See the following reading passage for six minutes:
In many organizations, perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team. Having a team of people attack a project offers several advantages. First of all, a group of people has a wider range of knowledge, expertise, and skills than any single individual is likely to possess. Also, because of the numbers of people involved and the greater resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in response to the task assigned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to problems and issues. Sometimes these creative solutions come about because a group is more likely to make risky decisions that an individual might not undertake. This is because the group spreads responsibility for a decision to all the members and thus no single individual can be held accountable if the decision turns out to be wrong.
Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the team. Team members who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel better about carrying out the work that is entailed by that decision than they might doing work that is imposed on them by others. Also, the individual team member has a much better chance to “shine,” to get his or her contributions and ideas not only recognized but recognized as highly significant, because a team’s overall results can be more far-reaching and have greater impact than what might have otherwise been possible for the person to accomplish or contribute working alone.

(Professor) Now I want to tell you about what one company found when it decided that it would turn over some of its new projects to teams of people, and make the team responsible for planning the projects and getting the work done. After about six months, the company took a look at how well the teams performed.
On virtually every team, some members got almost a “free ride” … they didn’t contribute much at all, but if their team did a good job, they nevertheless benefited from the recognition the team got. And what about group members who worked especially well and who provided a lot of insight on problems and issues? Well…the recognition for a job well done went to the group as a whole, no names were named. So it won’t surprise you to learn that when the real contributors were asked how they felt about the group process, their attitude was just the opposite of what the reading predicts.
Another finding was that some projects just didn’t move very quickly. Why? Because it took so long to reach consensus…it took many, many meetings to build the agreement among group members about how they would move the project along. On the other hand, there were other instances where one or two people managed to become very influential over what their group did. Sometimes when those influencers said “That will never work” about an idea the group was developing, the idea was quickly dropped instead of being further discussed. And then there was another occasion when a couple influencers convinced the group that a plan of theirs was “highly creative.” And even though some members tried to warn the rest of the group that the project was moving in directions that might not work, they were basically ignored by other group members. Can you guess the ending to *this* story? When the project failed, the blame was placed on all the members of the group.

You have 20 minutes to plan and write your response. Your response will be judged on the basis of the quality of your writing and on how well your response presents the points in the lecture and their relationship to the reading passage. Typically, an effective response will be 150 to 225 words.
Summarize the points made in the lecture you just read, explaining how they cast doubt on points made in the reading.

Hello High Inter 1 students, as I told you beforehand, you have to read the text below, Driver Loses Mabel, Finds Jail – and write a 50 word paragraph answering the following questions: What can be ALLOWED or NOT ALLOWED when you are driving? What should be done as a punishment for those people who drive drunk? Use more than 5 vocabulary from unit 3. Make a coherent text using all the information learnt from the two previous classes. Enjoy it!
