ADVANCED 2 – THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL

Hello mega interesting Advanced 2 students, here is your final assignment…  the last, but not the least… are you happy? I guess so! As I proposed you, in pairs, you’ll create the subtitles to a very short Pixar movie: The Little Match Girl, an animated short based on Hans Christian Andersen‘s tale about a poor young girl with a burning desire to find comfort and happiness in her life. Desperate to keep warm, the girl lights the matches she sells, and envisions a very different life for herself in the fiery flames filled with images of loving relatives, bountiful food, and a place to call home. Your deadline is June 15th.

You’re going to use the Subtitle Workshop program… click in this link to download it: http://www.baixaki.com.br/download/subtitle-workshop.htm

The Little Match Girl
It was so terribly cold. Snow was falling, and it was almost dark. Evening came on, the last evening of the year. In the cold and gloom a poor little girl, bareheaded and barefoot, was walking through the streets. Of course when she had left her house she’d had slippers on, but what good had they been? They were very big slippers, way too big for her, for they belonged to her mother. The little girl had lost them running across the road, where two carriages had rattled by terribly fast. One slipper she’d not been able to find again, and a boy had run off with the other, saying he could use it very well as a cradle some day when he had children of his own. And so the little girl walked on her naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold. In an old apron she carried several packages of matches, and she held a box of them in her hand. No one had bought any from her all day long, and no one had given her a cent.
Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along, a picture of misery, poor little girl! The snowflakes fell on her long fair hair, which hung in pretty curls over her neck. In all the windows lights were shining, and there was a wonderful smell of roast goose, for it was New Year’s eve. Yes, she thought of that!
In a corner formed by two houses, one of which projected farther out into the street than the other, she sat down and drew up her little feet under her. She was getting colder and colder, but did not dare to go home, for she had sold no matches, nor earned a single cent, and her father would surely beat her. Besides, it was cold at home, for they had nothing over them but a roof through which the wind whistled even though the biggest cracks had been stuffed with straw and rags.
Her hands were almost dead with cold. Oh, how much one little match might warm her! If she could only take one from the box and rub it against the wall and warm her hands. She drew one out. R-r-ratch! How it sputtered and burned! It made a warm, bright flame, like a little candle, as she held her hands over it; but it gave a strange light! It really seemed to the little girl as if she were sitting before a great iron stove with shining brass knobs and a brass cover. How wonderfully the fire burned! How comfortable it was! The youngster stretched out her feet to warm them too; then the little flame went out, the stove vanished, and she had only the remains of the burnt match in her hand.
She struck another match against the wall. It burned brightly, and when the light fell upon the wall it became transparent like a thin veil, and she could see through it into a room. On the table a snow-white cloth was spread, and on it stood a shining dinner service. The roast goose steamed gloriously, stuffed with apples and prunes. And what was still better, the goose jumped down from the dish and waddled along the floor with a knife and fork in its breast, right over to the little girl. Then the match went out, and she could see only the thick, cold wall. She lighted another match. Then she was sitting under the most beautiful Christmas tree. It was much larger and much more beautiful than the one she had seen last Christmas through the glass door at the rich merchant’s home. Thousands of candles burned on the green branches, and colored pictures like those in the printshops looked down at her. The little girl reached both her hands toward them. Then the match went out. But the Christmas lights mounted higher. She saw them now as bright stars in the sky. One of them fell down, forming a long line of fire.
“Now someone is dying,” thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only person who had loved her, and who was now dead, had told her that when a star fell down a soul went up to God.
She rubbed another match against the wall. It became bright again, and in the glow the old grandmother stood clear and shining, kind and lovely.
“Grandmother!” cried the child. “Oh, take me with you! I know you will disappear when the match is burned out. You will vanish like the warm stove, the wonderful roast goose and the beautiful big Christmas tree!”
And she quickly struck the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother with her. And the matches burned with such a glow that it became brighter than daylight. Grandmother had never been so grand and beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and both of them flew in brightness and joy above the earth, very, very high, and up there was neither cold, nor hunger, nor fear-they were with God.
But in the corner, leaning against the wall, sat the little girl with red cheeks and smiling mouth, frozen to death on the last evening of the old year. The New Year’s sun rose upon a little pathetic figure. The child sat there, stiff and cold, holding the matches, of which one bundle was almost burned.
“She wanted to warm herself,” the people said. No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, and how happily she had gone with her old grandmother into the bright New Year.

Dr. Michelle Rhodes
Principal, Wolftrap Elementary School
1205 Beulah Road
Vienna, VA 22182

Dear Dr. Rhodes:

I enjoyed our conversation on February 18th at the Family and Child Development seminar on teaching elementary children and appreciated your personal input about balancing the needs of children and the community during difficult economic times.  This letter is to follow-up about the Fourth Grade Teacher position as discussed at the seminar.  I will complete my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction at Virginia Tech in May 2011, and will be available for employment as soon as needed for the 2011-12 school year.

My teacher preparation program at Virginia Tech has included a full academic year of student teaching. Last semester I taught second grade and this semester am teaching fourth grade. These valuable experiences have afforded me the opportunity to:

  • Develop lesson plans on a wide range of topics and varying levels of academic ability,

  • Work with emotionally and physically challenged students in a total inclusion program,

  • Observe and participate in effective classroom management approaches,

  • Assist with parent-teacher conferences, and

  • Complete in-service sessions on diversity, math and reading skills, and community relations.

My experience includes work in a private day care facility, Rainbow Riders Childcare Center, and in Virginia Tech’s Child Development Laboratory.  Both these facilities are NAEYC-accredited and adhere to the highest standards.  At both locations, I led small and large group activities, helped with lunches and snacks, and implemented appropriate activities.  Both experiences also provided me with extensive exposure to the implementation of developmentally appropriate activities and materials.

I enthusiastically look forward to putting my knowledge and experience into practice in the public school system. Next week I will be in Vienna, and I plan to call you then to answer any questions that you may have.  I can be reached before then at (540) 555-7670.  Thank you very much for your consideration.

Sincerely,
(handwritten signature)

Subject line: (logical to recipient!) Application for sales representative for mid-Atlantic area

April 14, 2010

Mr. William Jackson
Employment Manager
Acme Pharmaceutical Corporation
13764 Jefferson Parkway
Roanoke, VA 24019
jackson@acmepharmaceutical.com

Dear Mr. Jackson:

From the Acme web site I learned about your need for a sales representative for the Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina areas. I am very interested in this position with Acme Pharmaceuticals, and believe that my education and employment background are appropriate for the position.

You indicate that a requirement for the position is a track record of success in meeting sales goals. I have done this. After completion of my B.S. in biology, and prior to beginning my master’s degree in marketing, I worked for two years as a sales representative with a regional whole foods company.  My efforts yielded success in new business development, and my sales volume consistently met or exceeded company goals. I would like to repeat that success in the pharmaceutical industry, using my academic background in science and business. I will complete my M.S. in marketing in mid-May and will be available to begin employment in early June.

Attached is a copy of my resume, which more fully details my qualifications for the position.

I look forward to talking with you regarding sales opportunities with Acme Pharmaceuticals. Within the next week I will contact you to confirm that you received my e-mail and resume and to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you very kindly for your consideration.

Explain why you are sending a resume.
Don’t send a resume without a cover letter.  Don’t make the reader guess what you are asking for; be specific: Do you want a summer internship opportunity, or a permanent position at graduation; are you inquiring about future employment possibilities?

Tell specifically how you learned about the position or the organization — a flyer posted in your department, a web site, a family friend who works at the organization. It is appropriate to mention the name of someone who suggested that you write.

Convince the reader to look at your resume.
The cover letter will be seen first. Therefore, it must be very well written and targeted to that employer.

Call attention to elements of your background — education, leadership, experience — that are relevant to a position you are seeking. Be as specific as possible, using examples.

Reflect your attitude, personality, motivation, enthusiasm, and communication skills.

Provide or refer to any information specifically requested in a job advertisement that might not be covered in your resume, such as availability date, or reference to an attached writing sample.

ADVANCED 2 – SOMEONE IMPORTANT TO ME – REVISED

MAITHE

When I think of a friend who offers me his shoulder when I’m upset – someone that makes me smiles when I am crying, who shares with me my gains, my joys, who complains, but it is always with me, this person is my sister. When I think of someone for whom I would die or kill, it’s her. For these reasons, she is my life and I love her so much. She is the owner of a singular beauty unaware of the power that her eyes have. She has a unique sensibility. She owners a big heart. She is beautiful, sweet, polite and intelligent. She is the woman I would like to be. Sometimes when I lose control, I stop, listen to her comments and orientations and I am proud to see the beautiful character she has. I stop and think how much joy she gave me. I know sometimes I’m boring, but I am that sister for better or worse. I want more than anyone her happiness. I want she trusts me the same way I trust her. I am proud and I am honored enough to be her sister.

REBECA BASTOS

It’s difficult to choose someone to idolize. There is my family and I could talk about any of them. My friends too, but I choose talk about my uncle, he has Down syndrome and the purest heart that one can know. He always does what he can to help without expecting anything in return and he always brings a smile. Being with him is like going back to my four years, he always taught me to see the beauty of life and the best in people. When I’m down I always think of his smile and his innocence and it alone makes me feel better. It is very gratifying to see how he treats people on the street, people he does not know. Imagine how the world would be if everyone were like him. I’m grateful for everything he taught me and for have had the opportunity to live with someone so special. If I could I would wish the world to be like him.

MARINA FREIRE

A person who will always be with me is my mother. Even with the agues we have, with the differences and the flaws we have. She makes me feel good, she would do anything for me, and I would the same for her. She’s a good person and she always helps everyone. My mother always sees goodness in people, sometimes she seems like a child or like a dog and I’m proud to have such a wonderful mother. I love her more than words, songs, or anything can say and nobody and nothing can change it. I know she will be there for me, forever and always.

KAROLINA SALES

I’m going to write about my grandfather. He is my hero eternally. Since I was born, he had taken care of me. My parents are divorced, so my grandfather was like a dad to me. We used to walk on the beach and go to Aquário, Orquidário and Museu de Pesca. He also lived with me, so I always talked to him and asked for advices. He used to buy a lot of candies to me. When we watched movies, his popcorn was without common salt! Every day we had breakfast together and the dinner either. I’ll never forget these days. In 2008, he left me and my family. He came back to heaven, and God had received one more angel. Until today, I miss him so much and cry a lot when the memories come to my mind. But, I pray for his soul and I know that he gives me power to keep me stronger.

GABRIELA SASSAKI

The person who inspires me the most is my dad. He makes me a better person every time he draws my attention. He knows so many people that like him and with his sympathy he charms everyone. When I am feeling bad or sad he realizes it and he is always talking to me, offering help like any other friend use to do. When I was young, I used to be a selfish kid, the one who never lends something… My dad was one of the people who helped me to become a better person in this side and nowadays, I don’t have problems with this. He is the best person that I know and he would do anything for me and my sister, like we would do it too. We are always going out with all family… They’re everything to me and my life would not make sense if anyone of them didn’t exist.

Well… When I think of a person who inspires me, I think about my mom. She is a wonderful woman, who works hard to sustain my brother and I alone and she never complained. She is extremely sympathetic, a pretty woman. Neither too liberal, neither too hard, she is in the right spot! She’s everything in my life, and one day I’ll repay all that she gave and gives for me. My mom is my diva, my example!

It is really hard to choose just one person, and since I could not choose between my mom and my dad, I will write about both. They are really important to me because I have a part of each one, not just literally, but because there are lots of things that they taught me. I can be sure that they will always be there when I need something. Of course, we have some different points of view, and that creates occasional argues that thankfully don’t last long. But nothing is perfect, and I think this is the far it can get. One of the things I like the most is their incredible capacity to cheer me up. When I’m upset or angry or something like that, in a matter of seconds they can eliminate every single bad feeling I had. It doesn’t matter how big the problem is, we always find way to solve it.

MARCUS VINÍCIUS

As I can’t choose two people, I choose my uncle. He is the best friend I have, the best person that I had the pleasure to know and with him I fell that I can do almost everything. He is the kind of person who does not accept something in return, we are always playing video games or in the computer and having a good time together. When I was little child and he doesn’t work a lot we used to fix some computers. That’s when I started liking them and helping other people with computers, I own it all to him. My uncle will always be my inspiration for almost everything. He taught me to be generous with my brothers. I always remember the things that he does to us (my brothers and I). There is one less thing that I didn’t write here… Sometimes, when my uncle is out and I don’t know what to do when something gets wrong, I really think about his excellent advices to help me. This can be confused, but I really like my uncle and that’s why I choose him.

JOSÉ PONTES

I choose my dad. He is the best person who I know. He is the kind of person who helps other people, he doesn’t accept anything in return, he makes the day funnier or boring, he makes all he can to help me and the family. He is always working at home, outside, in the computer, but he always has time to me and my blunders. He is my inspiration. He always remembers me to study, to do the homework, to pay attention in the class. He always wants the best for me. We don’t have too much money but if I need something very important he makes a way to buy it for me.

The person I decided to choose is one of the many that could have been chosen. My brother has always helped me; he helps me in important things or simple things as a ride on a rainy day. I can still remember the time when after I come back home from school we played videogame and watched TV together. I have to say that sometimes I ended being annoying to him, as all little brothers are from time to time, and we fought and argued but we always make peace after a couple hours. Nowadays we don’t see each other all the time, I study in the morning and he goes to work and after to the college and on the weekends we generally go out with friends, but we still found some time to talk. No matter how much we argued, fought or annoyed each other, I miss the time when I could spend the all the day with my brother.

VITTORIO

My brother, I chose my brother because he is so important for me, I hope he could know how much, he was polite, smart, funny and friendly. He helped me with many problems, he was there for me but I didn’t give him the importance he needed. There were many things I could do with him but I didn’t, because they weren’t so important to me in the past, but they are now. He used to help me with lessons, we used to watch TV together, play video games and go to the movies but we had fights, and when I was angry with him I wanted to be alone, be away but I didn’t know how that would be. Now I know, and I don’t like it. Inside my heart I always wanted to be good to him, to have nice conversations, do funny things and be happy, like we usually were. He protected me, I knew when we were together that I was protected. So, as one of my friends said me, I need to feel him with me then he will give me strength to get through the day. I always loved our conversations, I don’t even care about what, but they were great. And we used to go to school, scout, mall and many places together. And the thing I liked the most about him was that after we had a fight he wanted to apologize and be fine with me, even if I was still angry. The last time we were together at home we had a fight, but after that the last time I saw him I was afraid, but I could see by his eyes that he was trying to giving me a “have a good day at school”, and he wasn’t angry. But no one of us spoke. I don’t know what he wanted or what he felt, but in my mind for all I knew about him, he just wanted us to be happy. He was good to me, he loved me, he was extremely polite with nice people and even with the bad people, he didn’t complained about anything. He used to think about the other people’s feelings. I’m grateful to have a brother like him. I knew he was ashamed sometimes about me, but he never stopped to do things I needed. So, as I remember our past, I do remember that my first day at CNA I was brought by him. I still feel sad and alone but I will always smile and be happy too, because of him. Love you brother.
